The association between risk factors, sleep-related characteristics, excessive daytime sleepiness, and falls in older adults

• 33.8% of older adults reported a history of falls
• Night-time awakenings (“waking up during the night”) were the strongest sleep-related risk factor
• Excessive daytime sleepiness and difficulty falling asleep also significantly increased fall risk
• The study recommends an integrated fall-prevention approach together with chronic disease management
• Promoting sleep hygiene and screening for daytime sleepiness may help reduce falls and support healthy aging
