ในการแสดงปาฐกถาเทิดพระเกียรติ “สิริศิลป์จินตภาพน้ำพระทัยเจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณ์” หัวข้อ “วิทยาการเพื่อมวลมนุษย์: พระวิริยอุตสาหะด้านมะเร็งวิทยา” เนื่องในโอกาสวันคล้ายวันประสูติ ศาสตราจารย์ ดร. สมเด็จพระเจ้าน้องนางเธอ เจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณวลัยลักษณ์ อัครราชกุมารี กรมพระศรีสวางควัฒน วรขัตติยราชนารี องค์ประธานและนายกสภาราชวิทยาลัยจุฬาภรณ์ ๔ กรกฎาคม ๒๕๖๙ โดยมี รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ทัศนา บุญทอง กรรมการและเลขาธิการมูลนิธิรางวัลสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณ์ฯ เป็นผู้กล่าวปาฐกถา เมื่อวันที่ ๒ กรกฎาคม ๒๕๖๙ ที่ผ่านมา ณ ห้อง Convention Hall ชั้น ๖ อาคารกรมพระศรีสวางควัฒน โรงพยาบาลจุฬาภรณ์
“รางวัลสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณ์” เป็นรางวัลระดับนานาชาติที่จัดตั้งขึ้นเพื่อเทิดพระเกียรติและเผยแพร่พระเกียรติคุณศาสตราจารย์ ดร. สมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าฯ กรมพระศรีสวางควัฒน วรขัตติยราชนารี ในวโรกาสทรงเจริญพระชนมายุ ๖๕ ปี วันที่ ๔ กรกฎาคม ๒๕๖๕ ด้วยสำนึกในพระกรุณาธิคุณที่ทรงมีต่อประชาชนชาวไทยโดยเฉพาะด้านการวิจัยและพัฒนาเพื่อการป้องกัน ควบคุมโรคมะเร็ง และการดูแลรักษาผู้ป่วยมะเร็ง โดยรางวัลสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณ์ Princess Chulabhorn Award เป็นรางวัลระดับนานาชาติเพื่อยกย่องและเชิดชูเกียรติแก่บุคคลหรือกลุ่มบุคคลที่มีความเป็นเลิศ มีผลงานวิจัย ค้นคว้า หรือการบำบัดรักษาโรคมะเร็งที่เป็นประโยชน์และสร้างคุณูปการอย่างยิ่งใหญ่แก่มวลมนุษยชาติในระดับสากล
สำหรับผู้ได้รับพระราชทาน “รางวัลสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณ์” ครั้งที่ ๓ ประจำปีพุทธศักราช ๒๕๖๘ มีผู้ได้รับรางวัลร่วมกันจำนวน ๒ ท่าน ซึ่งเป็นผู้ที่สร้างคุณูปการอันยิ่งใหญ่และปฏิวัติวงการรักษาโรคมะเร็งของโลก ได้แก่
ศาสตราจารย์ นายแพทย์หวัง เจิ้นอี้ (Professor Wang Zhen-Yi) ผู้อำนวยการกิตติมศักดิ์ คณะแพทยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเซี่ยงไฮ้เจียวทงศาสตราจารย์ นายแพทย์เฉิน จู (Professor Chen Zhu) อดีตผู้อำนวยการสถาบันโลหิตวิทยาแห่งเซี่ยงไฮ้ และประธานสภากาชาดแห่งประเทศจีนผลงานของศาสตราจารย์ทั้งสองท่าน นับเป็นความก้าวหน้าครั้งสำคัญครั้งหนึ่งในประวัติศาสตร์การแพทย์ โดยท่านคือผู้ค้นพบและพัฒนาแนวทางการรักษาโรคมะเร็งเม็ดเลือดขาวชนิดเฉียบพลันชนิดโพรไมอีโลไซติก (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia หรือ APL) ซึ่งในอดีตถือเป็นหนึ่งในมะเร็งเม็ดเลือดขาวชนิดที่ร้ายแรงที่สุด ผู้ป่วยมักเสียชีวิตอย่างรวดเร็วจากการเกิดภาวะเลือดออกรุนแรง โดยมีอัตราการรอดชีวิตเพียงร้อยละ ๓๐-๔๐ เท่านั้น ทว่า ศาสตราจารย์ทั้งสองท่านได้ปฏิวัติวงการรักษาโรคมะเร็ง ด้วยการใช้กรดวิตามินเอ (All-trans Retinoic Acid หรือ ATRA) ร่วมกับ สารหนูออกไซด์ (Arsenic Trioxide หรือ ATO) ซึ่งการค้นพบการรักษาแบบมุ่งเป้าคู่ที่เปลี่ยนแนวคิดจากการทำลายเซลล์มะเร็งโดยตรงแบบดั้งเดิม หรือเคมีบำบัดที่สร้างผลข้างเคียงรุนแรง มาเป็นการสอนหรือกระตุ้นให้เซลล์มะเร็งที่กลายพันธุ์อันร้ายแรง กลับมาพัฒนาและเปลี่ยนสภาพเป็นเซลล์ปกติที่ไม่มีพิษต่อเซลล์ (Cytotoxicity) การบำบัดนี้จึงกลายเป็นสูตรการรักษาแรกของโลกที่ไม่ใช้ยาเคมีบำบัด หรือ Chemotherapy-free ในการรักษามะเร็งที่แพร่กระจายแล้วให้หายขาดได้ โดยมีผลข้างเคียงต่ำมาก ส่งผลให้ผู้ป่วยโรค APL ในปัจจุบัน มีอัตราการรอดชีวิตและหายขาดสูงถึงร้อยละ ๙๐-๙๕ พลิกโฉมจากโรคที่ร้ายแรงที่สุด ให้กลายเป็นโรคมะเร็งเม็ดเลือดขาวที่สามารถรักษาให้หายขาดได้มากที่สุด และกลายเป็นต้นแบบของ “การแพทย์แม่นยำ” (Precision Medicine) และ “การรักษาแบบมุ่งเป้า” (Targeted Therapy) ในปัจจุบัน
สิ่งที่ยิ่งใหญ่และน่าชื่นชมที่สุดซึ่งสอดคล้องกับพระปณิธานอย่างแท้จริง คือ “จิตวิญญาณแห่งความเสียสละ” โดยศาสตราจารย์ทั้งสองท่านไม่ได้จดสิทธิบัตรหรือลิขสิทธิ์ในการค้นพบนี้เลยซึ่งทำให้ทั่วโลกสามารถผลิตยา ATRA และ Arsenic Trioxide ได้ด้วยราคาที่สามารถเข้าถึงได้ สามารถช่วยชีวิตผู้ป่วยได้อย่างแพร่หลาย คุณสมบัติและการอุทิศตนของ ศาสตราจารย์ นายแพทย์ หวัง เจิ้นอี้ และ ศาสตราจารย์ นายแพทย์ เฉิน จู จึงเป็นสิ่งยืนยันเด่นชัดถึงความดีงามและคู่ควรอย่างยิ่งต่อการได้รับพระราชทานรางวัลอันทรงเกียรติในครั้งนี้ ท่านทั้งสองไม่เพียงแต่ใช้ “วิทยาการเพื่อมวลมนุษย์” ในการเอาชนะโรคร้าย แต่ยังยึดมั่นถึงประโยชน์ส่วนรวมเพื่อให้มนุษยชาติสามารถเข้าถึงการรักษานั้นได้อย่างเท่าเทียม

Chulabhorn Royal Academy, in collaboration with the Princess Chulabhorn Award Foundation under the Royal Patronage, officially announced the results of the 3rd Princess Chulabhorn Award for the year 2025. The announcement was made during a special commemorative lecture titled “Sirisilapin: Fantasia – The Reflection of HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s Benevolence” under the topic “Science for Humanity: Royal Dedication to Oncology,” organized to celebrate the birthday anniversary of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana, President of Chulabhorn Royal Academy, on July 4, 2026. Associate Professor Dr.Tassana Boontong, Board Member and Secretary-General of the Princess Chulabhorn Award Foundation, delivered the keynote address on July 2, 2026 at the Convention Hall, 6th Floor of the Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana Building, Chulabhorn Hospital.
The “Princess Chulabhorn Award” is an international award established to pay tribute to and commemorate the global prestige of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana on the auspicious occasion of her 65th birthday on July 4, 2022. It stands as a symbol of deep gratitude for her benevolence toward the Thai people, particularly her support for research and development in cancer prevention, control, and treatment. The Princess Chulabhorn Award recognizes and honors individuals or groups with exceptional excellence whose research, discoveries, or clinical treatments have yielded significant benefits and made monumental contributions to humanity on an international scale.
For the 3rd Princess Chulabhorn Award for the year 2025, the award is jointly presented to two distinguished recipients who have made monumental contributions and revolutionized the global landscape of cancer treatment:
Professor Wang Zhen-Yi, M.D. Honorary Director of the School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong UniversityProfessor Chen Zhu, M.D. Former Director of the Shanghai Institute of Hematology and President of the Red Cross Society of China.The work of both professors represents one of the most significant breakthroughs in medical history. Together, they discovered and developed a pioneering treatment for Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), which was historically considered one of the most lethal forms of leukemia. Patients diagnosed with APL frequently suffered swift fatalities due to severe hemorrhage, resulting in a survival rate of only 30% to 40%. However, both professors completely revolutionized cancer therapy by introducing a dual-targeted approach using All-trans Retinoic Acid (ATRA) combined with Arsenic Trioxide (ATO). This discovery shifted the therapeutic paradigm away from conventional chemotherapy, which relies on direct cytotoxicity and causes severe side effects, to an approach that “teaches or induces highly malignant mutated cancer cells to differentiate and transform back into normal, non-toxic cells.”
This therapy became the world’s first chemotherapy-free regimen capable of curing advanced, metastatic cancer with minimal side effects. As a result, APL patients today experience a survival and cure rate as high as 90% to 95%. This breakthrough has transformed one of the most fatal diseases into the most curable form of leukemia, serving as a foundational blueprint for modern “Precision Medicine” and “Targeted Therapy.”
The most admirable aspect of their achievement, which truly aligns with Her Royal Highness’s royal determination, is their “spirit of self-sacrifice.” Neither professor filed for patents or copyrights for this monumental discovery. This selfless act has enabled pharmaceutical manufacturers worldwide to produce ATRA and Arsenic Trioxide at affordable prices, making the life-saving treatment widely accessible to patients globally. The outstanding merits and dedication of Professor Wang Zhen-Yi and Professor Chen Zhu clearly affirm their exceptional worthiness for this prestigious royal award. The two laureates have not only utilized “Science for Humanity” to conquer a deadly disease but have also remained steadfastly committed to the public good, ensuring that humanity can access this cure with true equality.
